Dr. Jean-Daniel Saphores is currently Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Irvine. He also has secondary appointments in the departments of Planning, Policy and Design and in Economics. Dr. Saphores was educated at Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées, Paris, France, the University of Colorado at Boulder, and Cornell University (Ithaca, New York), where he earned a PhD in Applied Economics with specializations in resource economics, statistics, and finance. Dr. Saphores is active as a university educator, researcher, and administrator, and for TRB. For work on modeling emissions of air pollutants from trucks, he won TRB’s Pyke Johnson award in 2009. He has authored over eighty research articles (as of 2025) and served as principal investigator or co-principal investigators on projects funded by many national, state, and local agencies including the NSF, the EPA, Caltrans, CARB, UCTC, and the Pacific Southwest Region UTC. He also worked for three years as a consulting engineer for Woodward-Clyde Consultants, in Denver, Colorado.
