ITS-Irvine has been at the forefront of Intelligent Transportation Systems research since the 1990s. Our work for Caltrans on the Advanced Transportation Management System Testbed furthered the state of the art in traffic simulation, travel demand modeling, artificial intelligence applications in traffic management and adaptive control of freeways and arterials. Our Detector Testbed for years explored new freeway detection systems to move beyond basic inductive loop detector technology through innovative applications of inductive technology and the development of new systems based upon video, radar, and other solutions.
Today our researchers apply systems approaches to the both the theoretical potential of automated vehicles along with specific applications, contemplate cybersecurity implications of connected vehicles, continue to stretch roadway data collection and analysis capabilities, and contemplate continually propose new technological solutions to today’s and tomorrow’s transportation challenges. Subtopics in this area include:
- Intelligent transportation systems
- Connected and autonomous vehicles
- Artificial intelligence and big data in transportation
- Cybersecurity in transportation
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
- Smart cities and infrastructure
- Data visualization and dashboards
- Privacy and data governance
