ITS has two high-performance servers for shared use. Each server is equipped with:
- 2 × AMD EPYC 7302 processors (16 cores, 32 threads each)
- 1 TB RAM
- 6 TB of hard drive space
One server runs Windows Server 2022, while the other serves as a Linux virtual machine host. Both are intended to support research and project work. The Windows server supports up to ten concurrent users. The Linux server can create individual virtual machines for each user, with flexible allocation of CPU, RAM, and storage resources.
Windows Server (Uranus.its.uci.edu)
- Recommended for:
- Commercial software requiring physical hardware
- Software with licensing restrictions that prohibit VM use
- Limitation:
- Resource-intensive processes may impact performance for all users
- Software may be affected by other users’ configurations or usage
Linux Virtual Machine Host (Saturn.its.uci.edu)
- Each user receives a dedicated VM (VM OS can be Linux or Windows, based on software requirements)
- Resources (CPU, RAM, storage) are allocated based on request and availability
The server is ideal for:
- Flexible, isolated environments
- Custom software stacks
- Access is granted only upon faculty endorsement.
- Users must submit a request including:
- Preferred operating system (Windows or Linux)
- Primary software/tools to be used
- Estimated CPU, RAM, and storage requirements
- Intended duration of use (for planning purposes; no hard limit)
To request access, please obtain approval from your advisor first then complete this form:
- Each user must store their files in their own designated directory. Shared directories or storing files outside your assigned space is not permitted.
- Back up your data regularly; ITS is not responsible for data loss
- Usage is reviewed quarterly, Accounts may be deactivated if:
- No activity is detected
- The project is completed or discontinued
- The user no longer meets eligibility criteria
- Do not run unauthorized or malicious software
- Do not share your account or credentials
- Respect resource limits and other users
- Report issues or performance concerns to Jared Sun (zhes@uci.edu) immediately
