Shakib Kafashan is a fourth-year PhD student in Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC Irvine’s Samueli School of Engineering and a Graduate Student Researcher at the Institute of Transportation Studies. Originally from Shooshtar, Iran, Shakib began at UCI as a master’s student in Fall 2022, later transitioning to the PhD track.
His research interests span intelligent and sustainable transportation systems, connected and autonomous vehicles, transportation safety, AI in transportation, and last-mile delivery systems. He’s currently developing a simulation-based framework to assess transportation system vulnerabilities under potential cyberattack. His project integrates a physical driving simulator, optimization models, AI applications, and SUMO simulation tools.
Shakib plans to pursue a research-focused career in either academia or the high-tech industry. Presently, he’s exploring both paths with plans to gain industry experience through various internships.
When he’s not conducting research, you can find Shakib playing soccer and volleyball, hiking, cooking, or watching new movies.
