Travel Behavior, Land Use, & the Built Environment

Home » Areas of Expertise » Travel Behavior, Land Use, & the Built Environment

Our transportation system is the product of a complex interplay between people’s need to do things in their daily lives and the realities of their physical environment. We move to live and live to move and our collective behavior, and the social structures that constrain and shape it, has organized around different transportation technologies to the system we have today. Understanding the relationship between travel behavior and our built environment is critical to organizing how we use the land available to us and how we design for mobility and accessibility to meet societal priorities.

Researchers at ITS-Irvine have led the way in the study of travel behavior since the 1970s. Our groundbreaking efforts and activity-based travel demand modeling contributed significantly to the evolution of modern transportation planning from static models of trips to dynamic models of the activities that drive the demand for transportation. We continue this work today, with considerations of how well the transportation system is meeting the needs of all populations and supporting the planning and development of new systems to maximize safe and efficient transportation for all. Subtopics in this area include:

  • Travel demand modeling and forecasting
  • Transportation equity and environmental justice
  • Accessible transportation for people with disabilities
  • Transportation and social inclusion
