Jooneui Hong is a PhD student in Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC Irvine’s Samueli School of Engineering. Originally from Anyang, Korea, Jooneui holds a Master’s degree in Transportation Engineering from Seoul National University (2016–2018) and a Bachelor’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Korea University (2010–2016).

At the Institute of Transportation Studies, Jooneui’s research examines the relationship between travel demand and traffic congestion, with an emphasis on defining and systematically detecting congestion periods. He works with traffic data to improve foundational models for transportation planning, network design, and operations. His research interests include travel demand modeling, link performance functions, network-level traffic analysis, and traffic sensor data.

Jooneui aspires to one day apply his research expertise to real-world transportation system improvements. He’s motivated by the impact transportation research can have on society’s daily life and safety.

When he’s not conducting research, you can find Jooneui playing soccer and tennis or traveling.
