This project will use a co-design process to design a community-led bicycle lending library. Through workshops and surveys, the team will identify barriers to cycling, explore how policy and infrastructure can improve access, and create a framework for developing similar programs in other urban communities. The resulting framework for developing community-based bikeshare systems could be followed in similar urban environments.
As California deploys more intelligent traffic management systems, their sensors face risks from deliberate interference, such as lasers, acoustic spoofing, or electromagnetic disruptions. This project will systematically evaluate these threats in both lab and real-world settings to identify vulnerabilities, test defenses, and develop strategies to ensure these systems remain safe and reliable, especially for vulnerable road users like pedestrians and transit riders.
Limited transportation options can make grocery shopping difficult for low-income households, seniors, and people with disabilities. This study surveys residents in Santa Ana, CA, and Syracuse, NY, to understand travel patterns and preferences for grocery access, including access to co-ops, mobile markets, and delivery services. Results will guide strategies to improve access to healthy food in underserved communities.
Airports represent unique opportunities for electric vehicle (EV) charging, given long parking durations and high energy demands. Using parking and charging data from San José Mineta International and San Luis Obispo County Regional Airports, this project develops a model to determine the most effective charging infrastructure for airport lots and explores strategies like time-of-use optimization and demand response to align with renewable energy and improve profitability. Findings will help airports and similar transportation hubs plan investments that support California’s electrification goals while increasing profitability.
California has ambitious statewide transportation goals, but how well are they reflected in local planning? This project analyzes recent general plan updates in six Orange County cities to see which state objectives are incorporated and which are not. By comparing old and new plans and public feedback, the research identifies barriers to alignment and strategies for stronger coordination.
