Nash-Bertrand Competition in a Duopoly with Congestion

Abstract

I characterize the pure strategy Nash-Bertrand equilibrium in a setting where two firms at different locations supply a homogenous good at constant marginal production cost. A representative consumer incurs travel costs to the firm for each unit purchased; these travel costs increase with the amount of travel to each firm. The unique Nash-Bertrand equilibrium price exceeds the sum of the marginal production cost and the marginal external travel cost. Asymmetric equilibria lead to an inefficient distribution of travel between firms. Link tolls or subsidies can be useful to improve the distribution of traffic, but also reduce the welfare costs from imperfect competition.

An empirical study of inter-vehicle communication performance using NS-2

Abstract

In recent years, there has been increasing interest in inter-vehicle communications (IVC) based on wireless networks to collect and distribute traffic information in various Intelligent Transportation Systems applications. In this paper, we study the performance of IVC under various traffic and communication conditions by means of simulation analysis. We consider impacts of shock waves, transportation network, traffic densities, transmission ranges, and multiple information sources. We used a state-of-the-art communication network simulator ns-2 to measure success rate and message delivery ratio (MDR) for flooding-based IVC communication. For reasonable realism in the deployment scenario, we assume that only a partial set of vehicles on the road are equipped with communication devices, according to the market penetration rate. A Monte-Carlo simulation method is used with repeated random sampling of IVC-equipped vehicles. The results indicate how these parameters can impact the performance of IVC communications. By comparing the flooding-based approach (theoretical and simulation) and simulation results using AODV (Ad Hoc On-Demand Distance Vector), we conclude the importance of traffic environment and network protocol for IVC communication.

Abstract

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) are on the verge of changing the transportation industry. Despite the fast development of autonomous driving systems (ADSs), they still face safety and security challenges. Current defensive approaches usually focus on a narrow objective and are bound to specific platforms, making them difficult to generalize. To solve these limitations, we propose AVMaestro, an efficient and effective policy enforcement framework for full-stack ADSs. AVMaestro includes a code instrumentation module to systematically collect required information across the entire ADS, which will then be feed into a centralized data examination module, where users can utilize the global information to deploy defensive methods to protect AVs from various threats. AVMaestro is evaluated on top of Apollo-6.0 and experimental results confirm that it can be easily incorporated into the original ADS with almost negligible run-time delay. We further demonstrate that utilizing the global information can not only improve the accuracy of existing intrusion detection methods, but also potentially inspire new security applications.

Business Losses, Transportation Damage and the Northridge Earthquake

Abstract

The January 17, 1994 Northridge Earthquake damaged four major freeways in the Los Angeles area, creating the prospect of gridlock in the nation’s prototypical automobile city. This paper examines the effect of the transportation damage on business activity. Using survey responses from 559 firms in the Los Angeles area, this paper gives information on the extent and magnitude of the business losses that can be attributed to the transportation disruptions. Despite the fact that the freeway damage was repaired exceptionally quickly, 43% of the firms that reported any earthquake loss stated that some portion of that loss was due to transportation damage. For the firms that attributed some loss to transportation damage, the average response was that 39% of their earthquake-related business losses were due to the disruptions in the transportation system. Comparing information on these and other survey responses yields several policy recommendations, which are summarized at the end of the paper.
