Impacts of Information Technology on Personal Travel and Commercial Vehicle Operations: Research Challenges and Opportunities

Abstract

Travel, like many other aspects of daily life, is being transformed by the information technology revolution. Accessibility can no longer be measured only in terms of travel time, distance or generalized travel cost. Information technology gives people virtual accessibility to a rapidly growing range of activities. E-commerce has become a catalyst for structural changes in the freight transportation industry and is changing where freight moves, the size of typical shipments and the time within which goods must be delivered. In this paper we explore some of the potential effects of information technology on transportation, both personal and freight.

Can compact rail transit corridors transform the automobile city? Planning for more sustainable travel in Los Angeles

Abstract

Directing growth towards compact rail corridors has become a key strategy for redirecting auto-oriented regions towards denser, mixed-use communities that support sustainable travel. Few have examined how travel of near-rail residents varies within corridors or whether corridor land use-travel interactions diverge from regional averages. The Los Angeles region has made substantial investments in transit-oriented development, and our survey analysis indicates that although rail corridor residents drove less and rode public transit more than the county average, households in an older subway corridor with more near-transit development had about 11 fewer daily miles driven and higher transit ridership than households along a newer light rail line, a difference likely associated with development patterns and the composition and preferences of residents. Rail transit corridors are not created equally, and transit providers and community planners should consider the social and development context of corridors in efforts to improve transit access and maximise development.

A Latent Factor Model of Observed Activities

Abstract

This paper examines the problem of describing an activity in a concise, usable way. An activity is defined by a vector of observed attributes. Including more observed attributes improves the explanatory power and theoretical completeness of any model of activities, but simultaneously leads to a combinatorial explosion when considering questions about choosing between activities, or sequences of activities, questions which arise in simulation applications. This paper first builds a description of individual activities using a vector of observed attributes. Then latent variable analysis is used to reduce this vector to just two latent variables, which together explain most of the variation in the original variables.

COVID-19 and Food Shopping: Results from California and Comparisons with China and South Korea

Abstract

Following the first stay-at-home order in March 2020, many Californians responded with panic buying: they stocked up on masks, and hoarded toilet paper, hand sanitizer, canned food, bread, and pasta. Restaurants had to stop on-site dining services, and some even closed permanently. Californians adapted to the evolving restrictions imposed by the pandemic by switching to alternative channels for their groceries and experimenting with meal deliveries from participating restaurants. The purpose of this chapter is to analyze the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on how Californians shopped for groceries and prepared meals before and during the pandemic based on a random survey of 1,026 Californians conducted at the end of May 2021. To better contextualize observed changes in California, we also investigated grocery and prepared meals purchases in China and South Korea, two countries at the forefront of online grocery shopping and meal deliveries that provide a window into possible alternative futures for e-grocery and meal deliveries in California. We conclude by reflecting on how our increasing dependence on online grocery shopping and meal deliveries may impact travel.

Assessment of the Employment Accessibility Benefits of Shared Autonomous Mobility Services

Abstract

The goal of this study is to assess and quantify the potential employment accessibility benefits of Shared Autonomous Mobility Service (SAMS) commute modes across a large diverse metropolitan region considering heterogeneity in the working population. To meet this goal, this study employs a welfare-based (i.e. logsum-based) measure of accessibility, obtained via estimating a hierarchical work destination-commute mode choice model. The employment accessibility logsum measure incorporates the spatial distribution of worker residences and employment opportunities, the attributes of the available commute modes, and the characteristics of individual workers. This research further captures heterogeneity of workers using latent class analysis (LCA). The LCA model inputs include the socio-demographic characteristics of workers to subsequently account for different worker clusters valuing different types of employment opportunities differently. The accessibility analysis results indicate: (i) the accessibility benefit differences across latent classes are modest but young workers and low-income workers do see higher benefits than high- and middle-income workers; (ii) there are substantial spatial differences in accessibility benefits with workers living in lower density areas benefiting more than workers living in high-density areas; (iii) nearly all the accessibility benefits come from the SAMS-only mode as opposed to the SAMS+Transit mode; and (iv) the SAMS cost per mile assumption significantly impacts the magnitude of the overall employment accessibility benefits.
