SlowTrack: Increasing the Latency of Camera-Based Perception in Autonomous Driving Using Adversarial Examples

Abstract

In Autonomous Driving (AD), real-time perception is a critical component responsible for detecting surrounding objects to ensure safe driving. While researchers have extensively explored the integrity of AD perception due to its safety and security implications, the aspect of availability (real-time performance) or latency has received limited attention. Existing works on latency-based attack have focused mainly on object detection, i.e., a component in camera-based AD perception, overlooking the entire camera-based AD perception, which hinders them to achieve effective system-level effects, such as vehicle crashes. In this paper, we propose SlowTrack, a novel framework for generating adversarial attacks to increase the execution time of camera-based AD perception. We propose a novel two-stage attack strategy along with the three new loss function designs. Our evaluation is conducted on four popular camera-based AD perception pipelines, and the results demonstrate that SlowTrack significantly outperforms existing latency-based attacks while maintaining comparable imperceptibility levels. Furthermore, we perform the evaluation on Baidu Apollo, an industry-grade full-stack AD system, and LGSVL, a production-grade AD simulator, with two scenarios to compare the system-level effects of SlowTrack and existing attacks. Our evaluation results show that the system-level effects can be significantly improved, i.e., the vehicle crash rate of SlowTrack is around 95% on average while existing works only have around 30%.

Efficiency in the bus transit industry: Measurement and identification of performance determinants.

Abstract

Urban bus transit is an example of a public industry which relies on subsidies for survival. The history of mass transit in the United States reveals that the impetus for government subsidies can partially be attributed to factors exogenous to the industry. Subsidies have created incentives for distorted or sub-optimal input choices among the firms. Previous productivity studies of urban bus transit firms have not properly accounted for the effects of these incentives and the ambiguous nature of optimization decisions inherent in such an institutional environment. Furthermore, transit firms operate as spatial monopolies in almost all urban areas. I argue that in this situation, non-parametric frontier estimates of efficiency are appropriate measures for the analysis of productivity. I also investigate and compare several proposed modifications to the non-parametric estimation techniques. When the efficiency estimation technique is configured to the institutional environment facing this industry not only are some important results from previous studies of efficiency in transportation firms confirmed, but I also show that other factors postulated to explain differences in transit cost efficiency do not help explain differences in measures of technical efficiency.

Simulated network evaluation based on vehicle reidentification

Abstract

Traffic operations and control is highly dependent on traffic data collected from loop detectors, which is presently the most widely used traffic sensor. In addition, collected data needs to be aggregated or filtered in a way that can be understood and used by TMC operators. This paper introduces a new way to gather intelligent traffic data using state-of-art traffic sensors and demonstrates a framework for vehicle re-identification research through PARAMICS (PARAllel MICroscopic traffic Simulator), a traffic micro simulation model. Furthermore, through estimated travel time analysis, this paper provides a guideline for optimal aggregation interval selection depending on road geometry characteristics when combined with collected traffic information.

Essays in the political economy of contracting: An institutional analysis of private sector participation in urban public transport

Abstract

This dissertation contains three essays. The first essay deals with the political economy of contracting out with the private sector in the US transit industry. A model of bus contracting is developed to assess whether contracting out, as an alternative institutional arrangement, is feasible given the political economy of the US transit industry. The essay finds that significant constraints exist that hinder a more extensive use of contracting out in the US transit industry. The second essay deals with public transport organization in developing countries. It develops a model of public transport organization by examining the cost structures of the scheduled service and the informal transport providers. The implication of the model for bus franchising is developed and tested using Jamaica’s experience with bus franchising. Finally, the third essay uses the same theoretical framework employed in the first and second essays to develop a model of the organization of corruption in developing countries, and to construct a hypothesis on how corruption is different in Asia than in Africa.

Issues in Emerging Home Delivery Operations

Abstract

Despite the recent economic downturn, electronic commerce (e-commerce) continues to show strong growth. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, e-commerce retail sales for 2002 reached at $45.6 billion, an increase of 26.9% from 2001, while total retail sales increased 3.1% during the same period. Although e-commerce sales account for only 1.4% of total sales, the digital economy continues to grow, albeit at a slower pace than earlier predicted. The logistical requirements of e-commerce goods may stimulate greater complexity in supply chain management and potentially cause higher costs in carrier fleet operations. It is important to encourage the development of a freight transportation system that will support the steady growth of e-commerce, while avoiding the possible negative effects from the changes in freight transportation. Advances in home delivery have the potential to promote e-commerce as well as to create sustainable urban freight transportation systems. The logistical challenges of home delivery are discussed and potential solution strategies for the issues that will lead to more efficient and reliable home delivery systems are presented in this paper.

An Analysis of the Salient Characteristics of Truck-Involved Freeway Accidents Using the Method of Log-Linear Modeling

Abstract

The method of log-linear modeling is advanced as a procedure in identifying factors that underlie the relative frequency of occurrence of various accident characteristics, such as accident type, location, and severity. The method is centered on the estimation of saturated log-linear models for pairs of accident variables and determination of indices of association between categories of the variables. Using data drawn from more than 9000 truck-involved accidents that occurred over a two-year period on freeways in three metropolitan counties in Southern California, the method is demonstrated by analyzing accident characteristics both by type as well as by freeway route segment. Specifically, accidents by collision type are analyzed relative to characteristics such as the primary collision factor, the location of the accident, the time period, road conditions, and weather conditions. Differences among 38 specific freeway segments in terms of accident characteristics are also analyzed. The results of the analyses indicate that the method is a useful tool in uncovering underlying patterns in accident characteristics.
